From its earliest days in the ‘bookmakers office’ at Richard and Anne’s or in the potting shed at Sheffield Botanical Gardens members of the Northern Group have enjoyed a great day at their late-late show. This year was no exception with excellent food prepared by the two Annes, Wendy (see photographs above) and Christine, and 29 people sitting down to enjoy it. The show was perhaps the best ever and helping to judge it was Don Barnes attending a daffodil show for the first time in three years.
The main class for 9 cultivars from at least 3 divisions had six entries and was won by Frank Charlton with Ken Harrop second and Barry Hogg third, below from left to right. Frank’s entry was adjudged the Best Exhibit in show.
The Best Bloom in show was The Baltic exhibited by Mick Henson and the Best vase of three blooms was Sue Vunden’s Tripartite. A new award in memory of Richard Smales was initiated and won by Ed Crutchley for his three vase of three blooms. Photographs of flowers and presentations are below and other photographs follow.
Chris Bone was presented with the Discretionary award for services to the group.
Well what a great show. The quality and quantity of the flowers was most rewarding. Thank you to everyone who exhibited. As always a big thank you must go to our group members who provided the wonderful banquet . The lunch has become a major part of our end of season celebrations and takes place in a real atmosphere of friendship. In his Show report James mentioned the awards that were presented by Wendy our President . What i would like to add to his comments is the award that James himself received. In 2014 he was awarded our Discretionary award for work relating to show reporting and our Web Site . Unfortunately because of unexpected problems he was not able to receive the award . This year that was corrected. My personal thanks goes to James for everything that he does for our group. Another very special award was the new award given by Ann in memory of Richard who was a great friend of the Group. The award was given in the gift of Ann who selected the exhibit that she thought Richard would have most appreciated . This award proved to be extremely popular. Although this was the end of our show season it was by no means the end of our year. There are five Educational exhibits planned for this year . We are indebted to John Freer , Chris our Secretary and James for the the many hours of work that is involved in delivering these displays. Kind regards to everyone. Rae.
Must put on a comment myself to thank all the members that have helped me and The Northern Group through out the season.
Back to the late show and what a surprise when Don walked through the door it’s good to seen him on the mend after all his health problems and still in good form with his help to me. Also to Ann Smales for her help and the award that was given.
Thanks Chris and Rae. Yes it was good to see Don again. It was also good to see so many old friends who put time and effort into these very enjoyable occasions. Long may they continue.
