Ancient Society of York Florists Show 15 April 2015

This report was contributed by Sue Vinden (text) and John Freer (photos)

Seven exhibitors braved the pouring rain and gale force winds to place 217 blooms on the benches in the Daffodil Section of York Florists Annual Spring Show

Outside it was not a good day for gardeners but inside it certainly was Geoff Gardener’s day. He won the 6 bloom class with two Banker, Elmbridge, River Tyne, Doctor Hugh and Creag Dubh.   John Freer was second and Ken Bowser third.

Geoff’s entry of 3 x 3 vases was awarded the Daffodil Society Bronze Medal. He used fine examples of River Tyne, Midas Touch and Banker.

What a year it’s been for “Banker” in Yorkshire!

Simon Weston a local exhibitor progressed from Novice status to Open and produced an excellent vase of Unique and a very fine Rapture.

There were wins in the Novice Section for A J Thompson with Sealing Wax and J Gambold with Minnow.

A special mention goes to John Freer. Not only did he arrive early to stage his blooms, he then raced down the M1 to judge at the Elsecar Show before returning to York to give advice to novice growers – True Dedication.

There was much social chat and exchange of “Daffodil Showing Tales” but in the end all agreed – Once a Gardener Always a Gardener – (sorry Geoff).
