Colne Horticultural Society 12 April 2014

Another well supported show here in East Lancashire with 132 exhibits in the daffodil sections, 257 blooms in all.

The Daffodil Society Bronze Medal for Best Bloom in Show was awarded to Frank Hartnell for ‘Inverpolly’.

The Daffodil Championship Trophy went to Alan Greenwood in the three vases of three stems class for  ‘Aircastle’. ‘Unique’ and an unnamed Div.2 bloom (possibly ‘Bionic’).

It’s Alan’s eightieth birthday next year and it just shows that growing and showing prize winning daffodils keeps you going!

The Samuel Twynham Memorial Trophy  for six stems in six separate vases was taken by Tom Alty for ‘Aircastle’, ‘Kingham’, ‘Gay Kybo’, ‘Golden Joy’, ‘Avalanche’ and ‘Sportsman’. Tom also received a Diploma for ‘Cape Cornwall’.

John Gott  received a Diploma for ‘Rapture’.

Colne Society will be celebrating their centenary in 2015 and would like to borrow any photographs or memorabilia to put on display. Please email colne.horticultural@hotmail.com

  1. Thank you Margaret for your Show report and to you Keith for the lovely photographs. Enormous praise must be given to the Colne H.S. for staging their show at this new venue. It is an ideal building with great lighting and wonderful facilities. I’m sure that this brave venture was amply rewarded by a fantastic increase in attendance, there was a buzz about the place all day. Well done to all concerned. !
So nice to see Alan Greenwood there and showing blooms to his usual high standard. He and I frequently talk about having so many things in common besides exhibiting daffodils. We both share the same year of birth and we also were both married to our respective partners on the same day.

Well done Frank, the Inverpolly was stunning. A word also concerning Andrew Clark who managed to stage a few blooms despite becoming a father for the first time two days before the show. Congratulations on both counts !!
