The Rev G H Engleheart in proposing the toast of ‘The Midland Daffodil Society’ at its Annual Dinner in 1912 said “to propose in association with Mr. Sydenham, the Midland Daffodil Society seemed to him a flagrant example of a man proposing one’s own health because Mr. Sydenham was the Society”. After his death in 1913 the Annual Reports of the Society were headed Midland Daffodil Society – Robert Sydenham Founder and a great deal is written about ‘Uncle Robert’ in the Society publications.
