Sad News

The Daffodil World lost two ‘Greats’ last week with the deaths of Clive Postles and Tony James on the 1 and 4 November respectively.

Many Northern Growers in the 1970s and 1980s combined attendance at the Daffodil Society’s Annual Show with a visit to John Lea to see his seedlings. After the death of John Lea and Clive’s taking over his stock the pilgrimage location was changed to Clive’s and it was a delight to see the first time blooming of so many of the flowers which are today’s show winners. Clive will be greatly missed.

The funeral is at 10.00hrs on Tuesday, 15th November, at
Wyre Forest Crematorium
Minster Road
Stourport on Severn
Worcestershire
DY13 8DE

Tony James was great supporter of the Daffodil Society and a founder member of the Northern Group and regular attendee at its shows and meetings. He also was the person who introduced the late George Tarry to growing daffodils. A great photographer, like George, many of Tony’s pictures may be seen on Daffseek and he travelled on many occasions to the USA and the Southern Hemisphere to shows and conventions.

Although Tony and Pat had recently moved to Wales, his funeral will be held in Warrington and Pat has provided the following details:-

Tony’s funeral will be at 13:00 hours, on Wednesday, 16 November at Walton Lea Crematorium, Warrington WA4 6TB (this is on the A56 and very close to M56, junction 11).
Following the service, the family hope mourners will join us for a hot and cold buffet at the Walton Arms, WA4 6TG (this is located almost by the crematorium gates).
It would be useful if, over the next week or so, I had some indication of numbers likely to attend so I can advise the Walton Arms.
I would like to say how touched I’ve been by messages received both directly and on the Daffodil Society and Daffnet websites.
Many thanks for your assistance at this time.
Kind regards.
Pat

If anyone wishes to attend the funeral and would like a lift, please contact James Akers.

  1. With the passing of Clive Postles and Tony James the pool of available Daffodil knowledge has been greatly decreased. Both men were similar in many ways. Quiet and deep thinkers who could deliver a very meaningful answer to almost any question put to them on the subject. Looking back the many hours spent in their company will be regarded as very special as to be in their company was indeed a privilege. Their contribution to our world of Daffodils will be measured in terms of skill, commitment and ongoing friendship. They were true enthusiasts in every way.

  2. What a shock to hear about Tony James’ death so soon after Clive’s. We had met at the autumn meeting recently at Harrogate, along with Pat. What a gentleman he was and how dedicated Pat was, as his supporter and recently carer. What a gap there will be in our lives from the loss of Clive and Tony.
