Leeds Paxton show 1 April 2017

I have often heard exhibitors say “if it wasn’t for us there wouldn’t be a show”. They are wrong! If it wasn’t for the people who organise and support a show it wouldn’t continue as has happened  at Denton, Colton and Whitkirk, and at Wakefield Paxton Society this year. So a great vote of thanks to Graham Wheatley and the team of helpers who continue to make this show such a success. It was great to relax after the wonderful lunch provided by the Society, while Judge Steve Ryan deliberated, and reminisce about former shows. All that was missing was the ability to share a pint pulled by the late John Emmett, a facility unfortunately no longer available.

It was an early season this year so this, the first serious show for most exhibitors, was well supported with three entries in the ‘twelve’ and six entries in the ‘six’. Alan Robinson won both, he usually does, with Christine Yeardley second in the ‘twelve’ and Mr and Mrs Kendall third. In the ‘six’ the runner up was Wendy Akers with Christine third.

The following photographs cover virtually all the winners of the classes, click on them to get a larger view. The Best Bloom was Ombersley shown by one of the area’s newer and younger exhibitors Simon Wilson although Ivor Fox’s four-headed Kokopelli ran it close.

It was a great show. Long may it continue!

  1. Thank you for taking my flowers James, it looks a good show and obviously gathered more divisions than usual due to the early season, I particularly liked Ivor’s ‘Capability Brown’ and his N. poeticus hellenicus. I have been inspired to buy some of the unusual poets that our new bulb supplier Dave Hardy at Esker Hall Farm is offering. I saw them some years ago, raised by Sir Frank Harrison and was impressed by them then. If next year is also early it might be a good idea. I can always enjoy them in the garden if it’s more normal.

  2. very well attended show. congratulations to the show manager and all the helpers for putting on a thoroughly enjoyable show. My best bloom in show wasn’t Ombersley, it was ‘Golden Choice’.
